After adjusting the focus using the microscope, if the indenter touches the sample when the turret rotates, the indenter setscrew may be loose. Follow the procedure below to tighten the setscrew. (When indenter is attached correctly, the interval of indenter and an indenter holder is about 1 mm.)

1. Place a thin, sturdy piece of paper on the palm of your hand. Use the paper to grasp the bottom of the indenter and gently push it upward.
2. Loosen the indenter setscrew. At this point, the indenter may fall, so be careful not to let it drop.
3. Gently push the indenter upward, and then firmly tighten the setscrew.
If despite this the indenter still touches the sample, there is a problem with the flat spring unit, so contact a Shimadzu sales or service representative. Be careful, as the indentation will be too big if the tip of the indenter is too close to the sample.
