1. Automatically stop the GC/MS. 
  Wait until the "system shutdown" message appears.
 
 
2. Pull the column oven door latch toward you.
  
 
3. Remove the INJ side nut using the wrench 1/4 inch.
  
 
4. Remove the MS side nut using the 1/4 inch part of wrench (1/4 inch x 5/16 inch) or wrench (3/16 inch x 1/4 inch).
  
 
5. Remove the column from the column hanger. 
  
 
6. 1) Pass the nut through the INJ side of the column to be used.
  2) Next, pass the Vespel ferrule through. 
  NOTE: Pass the taper (fine section of tip) of the Vespel ferrule through to the nut side.

7. Pass the column through the column attachment jig (for INJ).
  
 
8. 1) With the tip of the column out by 1 cm or more, tighten the column attachment jig. 
  NOTE: Lightly tighten the column using the wrench until the column no longer moves. [Use wrench 1/4 inch]
  
  2) Next, cut the protruding section of the column with the column cutter.
  3) Attach tape or septum at the end of the nut as a positioning mark.
  Additional Explanation: Septum 
    Cut a nick into the cream-colored septum provided with the GC to its center using the sharp-bladed craft knife, as shown in the photo on the left. 
    Installation and removal can be made easier by fitting the column into this nick.
    
 
  Additional Explanation: Tape
    The Vespel ferrule cannot be reshaped by jigs in the same way that graphite ferrules can.
    Use commercially available cellophane adhesive tape or similar tape for marking.
    NOTE: Do not forget to remove tape after attaching it.
    
 
9. Remove the column and nut from the column attachment jig.
  NOTE: During this step, take care to prevent the Vespel ferrule and nut from coming loose. 
    Also, handle the tape or septum used as the positioning mark from shifting out of position.
  
 
10. Following the same procedure as that for the INJ side, pass the nut and Vespel ferrule through the MS side of the column. 
  
 
11. Fasten the column in place on the column attachment jig (for MS). 
  Following the same procedure as that for the INJ side, cut the column tip and attach the positioning mark. 
  
 
12. Before attaching the column, thoroughly wipe off any dirt on the column tip (from the tip on the INJ and MS sides up to the nut) with gauze, for example, moistened with acetone.
  NOTE: During this step, take care to prevent the positioning mark from shifting out of position.
 
 
13. Attach the column to the instrument.
  1) During attachment, tighten the nut with the positioning mark (tape or septum) lightly pressed against the nut as shown in the photo on the left.
  2) After tightening by hand, tighten one full turn with a wrench. 
  
  NOTE: If the Vespel ferrule is already fixed in place on the column, tighten by hand and then tighten 20° to 40° with a wrench.
 
14. Remove the positioning mark (tape or septum). 
  Make sure that the column is fixed in place on the INJ and MS sides, and then close the GC column oven door. 
  
 
15. Start up the [GCMS Real Time Analysis] program.
  1) Either click the [System Configuration] icon on the Analysis assistant bar, or click [Instrument] on the toolbar and click [System Configuration].
  2) Either double-click [Column] at [Modules Used for Analysis] in the [System Configuration] sub-window, or select [Column] and click the [Properties] button. 
  
 
16. 1) Click the [Column] tab to change the screen to the column system configuration tab page.
  2) To register a new column, click the [Add] button. A blank row is created in the registered column table. Enter the column information in the newly created row. 
  3) To delete a registered column, select the row in the table and click the [Delete] button.
  4) After setting, click the [OK] button. 
  5) Click the [Set] button in the [System Configuration] sub-window to finish system configuration.
  
  NOTE: In the case of a new Vespel ferrule, leakage sometimes occurs at the ferrule section by repeated raising and lowering of the column oven temperature. 
    If leakage is occurring, increase the temperature up to the operating temperature of the column oven and injection unit used for analysis, then allow the column oven to cool down, and re-tighten the nuts on the INJ and MS sides.
